On a typical overland conveyor there can be thousands of rollers, and a single seized roller can cut a belt, start a fire or stop production. Choosing the right roller at the design stage is far cheaper than replacing failed ones in the field.

This guide explains the six factors our engineers check when selecting carrier rollers and idlers for mining, quarrying, cement and port applications.

1. Load rating and idler class

Start with the load each roller must carry. This depends on belt width, belt speed, material bulk density, idler spacing and troughing angle. International standards group rollers into duty classes so buyers can compare products on the same basis:

CEMA (North America): classes B, C, D and E, from light duty to heavy mining duty, plus class F for extreme loads.

JIS (Japan) and DIN/ISO (Europe): defined by roller diameter, shaft size and bearing series.

SABS (South Africa) and AS (Australia): common in hard-rock mining and specified by many international EPC contractors.

For run-of-mine ore and high-tonnage coal, CEMA D or E rated rollers are usually the starting point. For aggregate and general bulk handling, CEMA C is often sufficient.

2. Roller diameter and belt speed

Larger roller diameters rotate more slowly at the same belt speed, which reduces bearing wear and noise. As a rule of thumb, belt speeds above 4 m/s call for 133 mm (5 inch) or larger rollers, while long overland conveyors running at 5 to 6 m/s commonly use 159 mm (6 inch) or 194 mm rollers.

3. Seal design: the key to service life

Most roller failures start when dust or water reaches the bearing. In dusty mines, wet coal handling and port environments, the sealing system matters more than any other single feature. Look for multi-stage labyrinth seals combined with a contact seal and grease reservoir. Moontain offers NC-type, Rulmeca-type and Australian-type seals so the seal can be matched to site conditions.

4. Shell material

Steel: the standard choice for most applications, with high load capacity and impact resistance.

HDPE: lighter, quieter and corrosion resistant. Material does not stick to the shell, which makes HDPE rollers ideal for wet, sticky or corrosive conditions and easier for maintenance crews to handle.

Stainless steel: for food, chemical and salt-laden environments.

Aluminium: non-magnetic, used near metal detectors and magnetic separators.

5. Position on the conveyor

Different positions need different rollers:

Carrying (troughing) idlers support the loaded belt, usually at 20°, 35° or 45° troughing angles.

Impact rollers with rubber rings absorb shock at loading and transfer points.

Return rollers support the empty belt. Rubber disc and spiral designs help shed carryback.

Self-aligning idlers correct belt drift and protect belt edges.

6. Testing and quality control

Ask your supplier how rollers are tested before shipment. Key tests include rotational resistance, total indicated runout (TIR), axial load, water immersion and dust ingress. Low rotational resistance directly reduces conveyor power consumption, which adds up to significant energy savings on long conveyors. Every batch of Moontain rollers is checked in our in-house laboratorio de pruebas de rodillos.

Need help selecting rollers?

Send us your belt width, belt speed, material and capacity, and our engineers will recommend the right roller type, diameter and standard for your project. Contact Moontain for a quote.

Six factors to check when selecting conveyor rollers and idlers: load rating and CEMA class, diameter, seal design, shell material, position and testing.

Learn how to select conveyor rollers and idlers for mining and bulk handling: CEMA class, roller diameter, seals, shell material, position and testing.
"_seopress_social_twitter_img_attachment_id":0
[1

post-1249","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
